Hello!

Sam Shields is an illustrator and storyteller based in the Midwest, where she feels incredibly lucky to spend her days shaping stories with her artwork— often with a cup of coffee nearby and a toddler underfoot.

She has always loved stories, especially the kind that make you laugh and feel something. After years working in the nonprofit sector with children of all ages, Sam returned to her first love: making art. She now works as a freelance illustrator, focusing on picture books, educational content, and art licensing for products geared toward kids.

Her work blends traditional and digital techniques and is rooted in a deep appreciation for humor, nature, and the wonder of childhood. Sam has a passion for literacy and feels strongly about her role in helping children develop a lifelong love of reading. She believes stories should be fun and funny — but also powerful tools for connection, growth, and healing.

When she’s not illustrating, you’ll likely find Sam in the garden, reading, making something (anything, really), or camping with her family in northern Michigan.

Sam is a thoughtful, collaborative partner and is always open to new opportunities — so if you’ve got a story to tell or a project in mind, she’d love to hear from you.
